Dear Karin,
There are several portable braillers, both mechanical and electronic.
The RNIB catalogue contains two mechanical, the stainsby and the tatrapoint.
At sight village last year we saw a German model which was a big as a
perkins but much lighter - if you want details let us know.
There are several electronic systems around - we use Eurekas and Arias
(which we can recomend - the Eureka has been replaced by the Aria, and I
think Technovision may possibly have some second-hand Eurekas for sale, or
could find one - for university level an advanced eureka would be ideal),
which are effectively laptop computers, but there are also several simpler
'note takers' around, such as the Braille'n'speak. As long as the student
has access to an embosser these are great - and the sighted teacher or
collegue can get an ink printout in expanded english which saves braille to
text transcription.
Get back if you would like any more details,
Adrian.
