As Disabled Students Oficer at Hertfordshire I have been supervising our
CSV's and also found it time-consuming and with a conflict of interest. I
have now found someone in Residential Services to take on the supervision
as he is full time and also more accessible to the Volunteers and has a
pastoral role in the residences.
We have found the Red Cross very helpful in training for lifting and other
needs. Our Occupational Health Nurse has also instructed individual
volunteers. One of our greatest problems was the need to have volunteers
who could drive - overseas volunteers with licenses were not always
competent in traffic.
I also found the need for some discussion of roles and relationships with
the students and volunteers. Most students are not used to being an
employer!
