Hello Marie,
At the University of North London, the braille embosser is situated in
the Independent Learning Unit, a resource centre for students with
disabilities, based in the main library. The Unit, on the ground floor, is
not in a designated quiet study area and we use an acoustic hood to
minimise noise. The students feel that this is the most appropriate place
for the braille facilities bearing in mind the importance of access to
information within the library.
I staff the Unit and am therefore responsible for training students in the
producing braille documents. With a combination of speech output and
braille indicators students are then able to do this independently -
maybe this is a point you could focus on? There are also two appointed
librarians to train and assist students when I am unavailable. As we only
have a few braille users, the librarians are rarely called on.
We do not charge students for this service. The cost for braille paper
and any other costs are met from the Student Services budget and not
by the library but as the number of blind students increase we may have
to review this in the future.
Good luck
Eddie Lynch
