Re Rachel Dixon's enquiry quoted below:
We had a bench made by our own Chemistry Dept technicians, BUT take note of
hazards on the bench!!
In the case of a chemistry student (which yours may not be) the lowered
bench and wheelchair tend to bring the student's face down towards possible
hazards, so we also had to provide a "portable"filter fume cupboard
(supplied by by Bigneat Ltd of 64/68 Solent Rd, Havant, Hants PO9 1JH
Phone 01705-492286; Fax 01705-492297) to extract fumes etc.
The fume cupboard cost much more than the bench, but was essential for the
student's safety and had a transparent flap at the front which could be
partially or totally brought down when necessary as a safety guard. The
fume cupboard normally stayed on the bench (which was on castors). Water,
electricity etc for the bench and cupboard were cabled in from an adjacent
source.
Normally the student was timetabled in such a way as to to avoid or minimise
lab-to-lab movement of the bench, but it could be easily shifted by lab
technicians when necessary.
