ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: TEACHING
DYSLEXIC ADULTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION (Mentor Training
Scheme)
The course is designed to train graduates to provide
academic support to dyslexic undergraduate students on a
range of courses across the University. The thirty-week
course has an initial training period of six four-hour
sessions exploring a range of issues relating to the
learning style and teaching needs of dyslexic adults.
The course participants ('mentors') will be assigned an
undergraduate student to teach in the first term; upon
completion of the initial training period the number of
tutees will be gradually increased to a maximum of
five students per mentor. Mentors will be expected to
provide weekly one-hour individual learning support
sessions to undergraduates. Regular, on-going
seminars with the course convenor will continue
throughout the academic year for the group of six
mentors; individual sessions will be arranged when
appropriate. The course is accredited by the
University of North London; it has a CATS rating of 45
points at undergraduate level.
Course Information:
The course recruits six mentors per year.
Successful candidtates are awarded a University of North
London Advanced Diploma in Professional Development.
Candidates are expected to attend all seminars which are
held on Tuesday mornings between 9.30 am and 1.30
throughout the duration of the course. Candidates must
have at least one other half day available for
teaching purposes.
