I have had a number of instances in recent years where we have
suppported students with either a temporary or permanent diasability by
allowing them to use computers in place of written exams - examples
include a broken wrist and RSI.
We have also had examples of students who needed another room to do
their exam in because they needed more frequent breaks - this means that
the total time for the exam is longer.
The problem in both cases is that the student, having longer to
complete, has more 'thinking' time.
In the first case we have the problem of calculating how much time a
student should be allowed. Obviously if they are slower on a keyboard
than they would be with a pen then they need more time.
In the second case the obvious thing to do might be to divide the paper
up but this is not always possible. Where a student simply chooses, say,
3 questions from seven they have to see the whole paper at the
commencement of the exam.
Anyone have any solutions?
