On the subject of the day's discussions, the first continuous speech
package, Dragon's Naturally Speaking, is now on general release. We
have had a demo today and are hoping to begin trials within 7 days,
but the initial display was impressive.
The system functions pretty well as Ian Litterick suggested, with the
following noteworthy points:-
No need to pause between words
Only one user per installation (in theory this means per machine)
Must have a high-spec machine (P120 min, P166MMX recommended, loads
of memory)
Only works in its own basic word processing window (much like
VoiceType)
No/Very limited control of the Desktop/mouse etc.
Recognition declared as 95% as opposed to IBM's 91% or Dictates 88%.
A full 'Professional' version towards the end of the year (?) with
all the current Dragon Dictate features.
We were very impressed with it, but obviously we need to start
'playing with it' ourselves and will revert with any interesting
developments if this is of interest to anyone.
