I've been following this topic with a lot of interest. My typing is
slow and I have to date tried two voice recognition systems. As I
have cerebral palsy, it can take much effort to speak on the same
tone all of the time. I found Dragon recognized many words and was
mainly limiting because of low spec equipment rather than my speech
impairment as the word being dictated was often flashed up but wasn't
'typed'. After a few days I could see that Dragon on a fast PC
would definatly be very helpful to me. The doctor who I see in East
London suggested asking a student speech therapist to help me whilst
'programming' the words in.
Trying out IBM Voice Type on the other hand was a complete NON
STARTER as it can't recognize one single word I say. I was given an
old British Telecom microphone headset which worked with Dragon, but
not IBM V.T. On one particular day, my father (not disabled) tried
Dragon and IBM V.T. and reached the same coclusion as myself.
As a Star Trek - T.N.G. fan, I long for a voice recognition system as
good as the one used by Picard, Riker, and co!
