For me impairment is the physical, sensory or cognitive impairment
resulting from some condition. Disability is the resulting
difficulty in performing a specific task in a particular
environmental situation. For example, I am blind, this is my
impairment, but blindness does not disable my ability to perform
every task that I need to perform: I am not at all disabled when
using the telephone or when reading or writing this message.
Yesterday I removed the battery from my wife's car and replaced it
after charging it. This task required knowledge and dexterity not
sight, however, I did need someone to connect the charger cables to
the battery, as sight was needed to identify the red and black
cables. If I had to perform this task frequently I could mark the
cables with a marking that I could feel and would then need no
assistance. So as you can see it is the environment that disables,
the environment is constructed by society, so it is actually society
that is largely responsible for disabling people.
