Some will be going to the NATSPEC colleges, such as ourselves, where a
24-hour curriculum attempts to create an environment where they can mix
with a broader variety of people in a supportive environment. It appears to
work quite well, though we're quite new to doing it.
They're underrepresented because, I would imagine, it will be harder for
colleges to assess EBD than physical or sensory impairments accurately,
because they are less able to manage their disability and orient themselves
towards study, and because supporting them requires cross-college approach
and a continual feedback from all those they come into contact with back to
their keyworker. In addition, they may well be more pro-active in creating
situations where prejudices become overt, causing management problems of
other kinds.
