Software prices should never exceed the manufacturers list price.
It is essential that one regularly looks around for the best deals.
However, it is less easy to compare computer prices when
component quality, reliability, support and service need to be taken
into consideration.
When you find a reliable supplier, stick with them, but don't let
them rest on their laurels. When you see an ad that looks more
competetive, ask them what is it they are giving you that justifies
the extra cost. It pays to have someone who understands the tech
speak to interpret their answer!
In the early days we'd hunt around for the cheapest supplier of each
item, but it was a false ecomomy. For example, if the printer is
supplied by the same supplier as the computer, the drivers will be
installed and problems will be resolved as and when they arise. If
the printer comes from elsewhere it will be left to the user or a
support person to install the driver software and each supplier will
blame the other when problems arise.
Multiple orders may reduce the cost on paper, but the resulting
situation can often tie you in knots and push support costs through
the roof.
