Denise,
There are really few economical methods of renting a computer and printer
for short periods of time - for instance, I recently rented two P166+ pc for
one month at a cost of £1,500! (per month) fortunately covered by insurance.
If they are really looking for a sophisticated Word Processor then they are
probably better off buying one of the combined typewriter/inkjet machines,
which retail at about £600 plus VAT and are 'portable' and well suited to
writing manuscripts etc.
Otherwise, they may consider lease purchase, which, over a three year period
can work out extremely cost effective, especially if they go self employed
when they finish their course. HardSoft international or people like Evesham
Micros all offer personal finance packages. This is the way that I started
and has proved extremely effective for the last 5 years.
But it soulds like the 'portable' option would be the most friendly and
lowest hassle, and these machines are really quite good if you are not into
complex wordprocessing and other intensive systems. Never look the simple
solution in the mouth - I long for the days that I used to run WP5.1 on a
dual disk drive machine with 256K memory - it was faster and more reliable
than WP7 on P166+ with 64MB RAM! (what a luddite!)
