Just the other day I had a final look at a computer that I bought for
my daughters (before dumping it!) a few years back STATE OF THE ART a Sharp with a c90
tape drive !!! It Cost A BOMB!! Now it is so much junk, but I still
have the primitive word processor and it can still be used.
It is'nt important what power you need to drive a word processor, or
if MMX is flavour of the month, it's what is there! ( This same
argument obtains if one is talking about cars, TV sets or
dishwashers)
In reality, only a fraction of the power of a computer or the
software is used by our students or, dare I say, ourselves.
The real question is what do we offer or recommend for our supportees,
a good machine that will do the job very well for the foreseeable
future (+_ 3 yrs.) If that happens to be a p2 500Mhz 64 RAM 10Gb
hdd (WOW! Techie talk!) that also makes coffee OK! If that happens to be the basic good entry
model at the time. We can't turn back the clock! By the way the real
cost of the most up to date machine now is LESS, in real terms, than the price I
paid for the old Sharp!!!
Tally ho Future, here I come! <FOL>
