Support for Deaf Students in Higher Education -
Professional Networking Activities
The Nottingham Trent University has received funding through the HEFCE
Special Initiative to encourage High Quality Provision for Students with
Learning Difficulties and Disabilities: 1996-97 to 1998-99.
One aspect of our project development plan is concerned with encouraging
greater networking between universities on the issue of support for Deaf
students.
During the 1995/96 academic year, we co-ordinated the administration of
CHESS (The Consortium of Higher Education Support Services for Deaf
Students), a networking group which was formed during the 1993/94
Special Initiative. The membership of this group currently stands at 16
universities, services and other organisations. We are keen to encourage
more universities to join the group.
We plan to organise one seminar on issues related to the support of Deaf
students in higher education in each of the three years of this current
initiative. Guidance papers will be published from the proceedings of
these events. As an initial event, we are running a seminar on Monday
9th June on "Supporting Deaf Students in Higher Education". A flier is
attached. Please pass these on to relevant members of staff in your
institution.
If you do not wish to attend the seminar on 9th June but would like to
join the mailing list for notification of future events or publications,
Email Chris Baxter with your details
Thank you.
