I see that Intel have done it again. The new Pentium II will only be
available in a new SEC (Single Edge Contact) card, incompatible with
all existing motherboards.
The PII will be released in 233 and 266 MHz versions and will
eventually run at 500MHz.
This is going to cause concern amongst other processor suppliers.
Industry sources predict the existing configuration will dominate
this year and most of 1998, but that, in the end, the Intel design
will dominate.
When considered along with the changes I outlined in a
previous message, it seems the 'standard' PC may be a completely
different beast this time next year.
