Regarding Gail Hine's message of 16/4/97
Gail mentioned a student who was seeking judicial review about her DSA claim,
but had been having problems getting legal advice and support in taking this up.
I thought I would reply just to explain what Skill's service is actually able to
do (and not do) in such cases.
Unfortunately, Skill does not have a solicitor or a legal adviser who works as
part of the Information Service. We therefore cannot give legal advice about
seeking judicial review. We can, however, refer students to education solicitors
or the Disability Law Service who can give legal advice to disabled people.
We are also able to discuss cases with students and advise about next steps that
may be possible if they meet a problem with their DSA applications. As an
information service with limited staff available, we are not able to take up
cases and advocate on a student's behalf, but we are certainly still in a
position to pass on useful experience and advice.
I hope this is helpful.
