When I was employed as a Disability Liaison Officer at Deakin University,
Victoria Australia, I provided services to a student with autism. This
student had behaviour patterns that didn't conform to those of her peers -
involuntary outbursts of singing, very little speech, hand biting etc. She
used facilitated communication to contribute in class, with lecturers, to
do her assignments and with her support person. She has since graduated and
currently a post grad student.
She, herself directed me as to the services, personnel and type of support
that she required. I recall her telling me that she..."wanted her support
person to limit her unacceptable behaviour so that I don't embarass
myself." She established a wonderfully relationship with her assistant and
I think this was the reason for her success. We trained 2 assistants but it
became very clear that one personality type was much more effective with
the student. She eventually requested that she be allowed to only use the
one person. Luckily that person remained well for the duration of the
student's studies.
This year another student with the same needs has enrolled at Deakin
University, at this stage all is going well.
If you require further information don't hesitate to ask.
