At Nottingham we try to collect the information which we have to
return to HESA, but I am trying, for internal purposes, to get the
wheelchair user/mobility difficulty category separted out for
internal purposes, since a whole lot of issues arise for someone who
has to use a wheelchair which do not arise for those who can walk,
albeit with difficulty. We once had a UCAS candidate who fell off a
ladder after she had been offered a place, and I only discovered her
existence when her tutor complained to the Science Library (where
wheelchair users cannot get in by the main entrance) that nothing had
been done to tell her about how to get in. Generally it would be part-
time postgraduates of whom I might not have heard. I am also trying
to get people with multiple disabilities to say what those
disabilities are,so that if, for example, they have visual problems,
I can send them any information which I am circulating to blind and
partially sighted students.
There is no threat on our forms that students will not get
concessions unless they make an entry.
Fortunately the process of entering the data this year was more
successful than it has been. For other items, an error list can be
produced if there is a blank, or if two fields give inconsistent
information.
