At Aston we have a Counselling Service which used to be part of the
Health Centre when this was part of the University. Now the Health
Centre is an NHS practice (not fundholding), the Counselling Service
still use part of their building but are a University department
rather than part of the Health Centre. At present the Counsellor
reports to the Secretary-Registrar but we are about to appoint a
Director of Student Services to whom the Counsellor will report.
Although our Health Centre has physiotherapists etc it does not have
any psychiatric staff so there hasn't been any suggestion that the
Health Centre should take over the counselling. Often there is
cross-referral though if a counselling client needs anti-depressant
drugs, for example, or is more seriously mentally ill and needs
referral to a psychiatrist.
