I know this subject has been discussed many times before so my apologies
in advance.
At the University of North London we are reviewing our screen reading
software and are considering purchasing a new product. We presently use
WindowBridge with DecTalk but have found many problems with it in the past.
Our main problem is the amount of memory it requires. The PC is linked to a
scanner and braille embosser. WindowBridge often crashes or freezes in
Windows but works fine in DOS. When reading the Internet it tends to read
the menu bar and other commands, thus causing confusion for the user.
We are finding many other similar problems. I subscribe to the WindowBridge
on-line discussion group but this does not solve my memory problems!
I have two points which I hope you can help with.
1. Does anyone successfully use WindowBridge in a Windows environment? If
so, what are the memory requirements and how user friendly do the students
find it?
2. What screen readers are other Universities using, and could anyone
recommend one for a Windows environment? I am aware of several including
Webspeak and JAWS, and although I have seen demonstrations I am not aware
of how satisfactory they are within Windows.
I would be particularly interested in what software is recommended by
Access Centres, RNIB etc. when applying for the Disabled Students
Allowance.
If you would prefer to email me direct, rather than discuss the same topic
again on disforum please contact me at:
