At the University of Nottingham, apart from staff being taken on for
recently-awarded grant for project to provide for Students with
Specific Learning Difficulties and Disabilities there are:
Officer for Disability Issues O.5
Director of Learning support Unit O.4
Learning Support tutors 0.6 of which 0.2 is paid for by disabled
student allowance
Driver for Disabled Students' vehicle 1
In the Estates Office, in the Careers Advisory Service, and in the
Library a member of the staff is designated to take a particular
interest in disability as it affects or is affected by their service.
in the Counselling Service the majority of the 4.6 fte staff have
qualifications and experience in dealing with people with mental
health difficulties. Student Community Action provides a volunteer
reading service, and an out-of-hours driving service, the latter with
drivers over 25. The Students Union employs two people to help
organise the various Student Community Action enterprises, most of
which are directed at disadvantaged people outside the University.
I do not know if they are full time.
If you cannot persuade Kings at this time to create an extra post,
you might look at getting them to set up a committee with
representatives of the various services and Hall Wardens and the
Health Centre, which is where we started in 1974. You have the
leverage of the Disability Discrimination Act, which does not do much
for the provision of education to students (other than require you
to say what you do) but does cover the provision of goods and
services even to them, and certainly to staff and conference guests.
We have 13800 students, excluding 1800 non-degree students in
Nursing and Midwifery and 6000 students on Continuing Education
courses.
