I will mention this at the SKILL Conference at Birmingham on 12th Feb
Below are my rough notes, I hope they make sense to you.
There are also some possible problems when it comes to printing the exam
script if it has been wordprocessed.
Exams:
A Chemistry student at SOTON is getting double time and a scribe -
but the scribe broke his arm. This 'extra' needs practice for effective use.
Consider the extent of Subject knowlege needed by the scribe to be effective,
and how this may +ve/-ve affect stuent performance.
(Language exams example on Dis-forum)
Using extra technology: WP in exams
Needs to be a machine controlled by the Uni:
Stand-alone as net access/own machine could result in abuse.
Needs to be a system that the student is familiar with, same
WP/CAD package + *same version*. (Compatabilty problems due to rapid change,
students' discount for *latest versions only*, uni may have older versions)
Syllabus/Past papers: If there are changes are you *sure* the candidate is
fully aware of these?
Venue: Noise and other distractions will be different to main exam hall.
Invigilation: A sole candidate in a separate room is vulnerable! Exams at the
weekend are a pain to everyone but especially to invigilators - do they
communcate this to the candidate? In a confined space the style of the
invigilation is of greater consequence.
Extra time = Extra clashes! No lunch?, No loo? no chance...
Regards
Ted
