Hi there Gail
I had to face this problem two years ago. I contacted the RCN and
others. RCN replied that they had no objection to pre-registration
training for nurses who were dyslexic. The problem will have to be
faced by the individual students when they look for work subsequent
to their training. There will ,I think, be a moral imperative on the
students when working to ensure, check and double check that they
have correctly read and entered medication notes.
You will have noticed the recent note from SKILL in that the NHS will
fund their students on the same basis as the DfEE in terms of
disability. This in itself is a good indicator to changing
attitudes.
Here at Middlesex we train about 2000 nursing students a year and
support them as we would any other student.
