Dear all
I have been working with two prospective blind students who want to study
Biosciences. Both are currently at school and at the stage of visiting
institutions in Glasgow to decide where to come. A few weeks ago they
underwent an assessment to see how safely they could work in labs by
using various pieces of equipment and to determine how educationally
valuable practical lab work would be to both students. Under supervision
they participated in a first year level Enzyme lab and the resulting
assessment concentrated on concerns over the students safety and on the
safety of others. However, both students were enthusiastic and worked
hard. Obviously this assessment is not fully comprehensive given that it
doesn't look at the possibility of creating adaptive strategies which
could be employed to enable both students to fully participate and work
to their evident potential in practical classes.
Are there any blind students who are currently studying any sciences
which involve a lot of practial lab work. If so, could you tell me ways
of working that are useful to you and of adaptations that have been made
to allow you to study on an equal basis. I feel I need case studies to
bring to the attention of the department!
Thank you
