Hi,
We run a text scanning service for disabled students who cannot see
well enough to read printed text. We employ sighted students to
do the work and they produce a floppy with the text on which the
disabled student can then 'read' using their own PC and voice
synthesizer or braille printer.
Our current hardware/software setup is old and expensive to run
(a Kurzweil 5200, flatbed with sheetfeeder, bespoke co-processor,
mono scans only), though gives good results still.
We are looking to upgrade to a new flatbed scanner and sheetfeeder
and run either Textbridge Pro or Omnipage Pro for the OCR (on NT
or possibly WfWG with PC Guard for security).
I would be grateful for any feedback from anyone who has experience of
using either of these packages. In particular we are concerned about
accuracy and speed of processing for text recognition. We do scan
foreign language texts on occasion so support for a range of languages
is important.
Whilst principly a software enquiry, if users of the above have any
comments/reccomendations for scanner hardware to accompany the OCR
package this too would be very welcome.
I will, of course, report a summary of replies to this list.
Many thanks,
Jim Higham
