I find that it has a lot to do with the development environment. For Instance, Visual Basic won't let you start a new line of code until the previous line is at least valid. This prevents the vast majority of spelling errors. In C++, the new Developer Studio is a boon. I would imagine that using Microsoft's Fortran Powerstation in this environment would be better that most environments.
