Denise,
Here at the Nottingham Trent University we have recently recruited notetakers
onto our 'Student Support Register' these individuals have all been trained
to CACDP notetaking standards and are at present entering themselves for
CACDP accreditation. They handwrite the notes (the most silent keyboard of
all!) and are contracted to each disabled student as 'their worker'- they
are paid by the students LEA as they are employed as 'Non-Medical help',
all students requiring this service are supported in claiming for the Disabled
Students Allowance as an addition they are supported in claiming for Computing
equipment for them to organise the notes onto for future retrieval.
In summary:
Students buy their own computing equipment through the DSA
Students pay for their notetakers, who are professionally trained
(and usually graduates)
I hope this is helpful, I think you will find this a common model among
University's who support Deaf students, we have extended it to cover all
disabled students who are unable to make thier own notes.
Best Wishes
Chris Baxter
