Sounds like the issue is resolved. I was going to say that this problem seemed to be more about the common law duty of confidence than data protection legislation, as confidence can be breached orally.

Thanks, that's a useful read.
Having now been able to get further details from all involved, it was not the grade itself that was disclosed. Although they had the awareness to believe they shouldn't share the actual grade, the employer said that "nobody has failed", from which the students knew they had at least passed (grade structure being pass/merit/distinction).
