Dear Kate,
My contribution from Ankara may not fit the logistical requirements of
the UK. I would like to draw your attention to the impact that any
support can have, even if below what a UK institution would consider
necessary. Your institution may feel you should be providing more. I
invite you to look at the impact that your work can have, way beyond
what you do.
I am sure that many institutions in the UK are hosting international
students, some of whom have impairments. Some of these will have the
opportunity to experience disability support for the first time. This
happened in my early years as disability adviser when a student wanted
to take a Master's course in the UK. She was on the cusp of accepting
her condition, and did not consider herself disabled, until she
registered at her UK university when she was automatically offered a
number of additional options. Her experience has had significant
impact in the development of access and inclusion in Turkey.
What I have experienced in 25 years in Turkey, and I hope Britain will
not have to endure with Brexit, is the need to develop flexibility and
adaptability when conditions are not ideal. Times of limited
resources can promote great creativity.
Best wishes from Ankara, as we head for elections on Sunday...
