Hi Mel
What reasoning did you give for collecting the next of kin information in the first place? I'm at a Housing Association too and we clearly state that we collect next of kin details so that we can contact them if we have concerns for the tenants wellbeing / safety
Thanks

Subject: [data-protection] Contacting next of kin
Hi everyone
I work for a housing trust, we are struggling to contact a tenant, and suspect they have vacated the property. We have their next of kin on file, I have two queries, firstly can we contact the next of kin to ask the tenant to contact us, and secondly if we do contact the next of kin can we explain why we need to speak to them i.e. that if the tenant doesn't contact us they may lose the tenancy?
My instinct is that we can't, we should only be using the details for an emergency situation, but at the same time its in the legitimate interests of both the trust and the tenant that they don't lose their tenancy...
Thank you in advance for your help
Mel
