Yep; we have to have a named alternate contact who has a password to give nursery staff in the event either my wife or I aren't able to pick up our son. Putting aside DP considerations for a second, the alternative solution described in the original email is bonkers from a purely child protection point of view!

Surely this is backwards, and they should be applying a "default deny"
policy? Require details of all those who *are* allowed to collect children, in other words.
