My first thought is that this isn't just a Data Protection matter.
A request for the content of someone's e-mails looks to me to be an interception request under the definitions in RIPA and the new Investigatory Powers Act (Sections 2 and 4 respectively).
This being the case, an 'informal request' from anybody seems likely to have trouble all over it - both for a requestor and a requestee - and I wouldn't touch such a request with a barge pole.
