Hi Seth,
It should be your IT department that advises you on how the back ups are
made.
They might use a simple cycle of backups where the tapes are reused
every e.g. one or two weeks or every one month. In this instance, your
data will be deleted after that 1 or 2 week or 1 month period since you
deleted yours. [Reusing tapes or space every 1 week is unlikely].
Take the option that they reuse the tapes every 2 weeks, but every 4th
set's tapes get put aside for 1 year, so that would mean something like
14 months maximum or thereabouts to have your data deleted.
If they really use tapes forget the idea of requesting the deletion of
individual files, and to be honest it could be pretty difficult whatever
they use. If they backup on hard disks the backup software may make it
easier to find what is to be removed (it is beyond my time playing with
computers).
IT normally wants to retain data as little as possible as it all mounts
up. The user may want to retain data longer to have a copy in the case
of accidental deletion of files. Given they asked you, they might have
some cleverer tricks than the basic stuff I am describing above.
If it helps a little.
Charles
