Margeret,
If you can help by providing details of the specific cases to me directly
([log in to unmask]) I will have them reviewed to understand if any
action is required.

Subject: Questions from SFE
Sent by: "Discussion list for disabled students and their support
staff." <[log in to unmask]>
I received quite an unusual question from SFE a few days ago. A student I
had assessed was getting some equipment which, amongst other things, she
would use to video children as part of her PhD research. SFE asked if she
was going to get consent from the children. Of course Universities are
very strict about these sorts of things and have strict guidelines to be
followed. But I wondered why SFE should ask. I would have thought that
once the equipment is given to a student then the student owns it and what
they do with it is therefore not the responsibility of SFE or is that not
quite accurate? I wondered what other people thought.
I must admit I have had a lot of strange questions/statements from SFE DSA
officers recently. One DSA officer said that some software could not be
recommended because it was not on the list, so I had to point out that the
software had not been actually recommended. Then the officer said one
piece of equipment was a duplicate support to a second piece of equipment.
Trouble with that is the second piece of equipment had never been ordered
either. Then the officer asked about radio aids for the student, but the
student is totally deaf so cannot use them, which had been explained in the
Needs Assessment Report. Another officer wanted to deny a study assistant
because one of the things it would do would be to reduce stress and anxiety
and this was not one of the agreed conditions, (the student's agreed
condition was Dyslexia). Yet as we know stress and anxiety will be a
symptom of nearly every disability we assess and virtually all support we
recommend will reduce stress and anxiety. I must admit that most of the
officers do take on board everything when I explain everything to them
about the disability and the support but I am puzzled about this latest
increase in odd questions. Maybe they are just having a difficult time for
some reason, or the officers are all new and just getting to grips with the
job, but I wondered if anyone else had received a lot of unusual questions
lately from SFE or is it just me!?
