In practice it is quite difficult to intercept the data, but mis-delivered letters are common, and post is not always secure in transit. It is a relatively simple matter to read a letter and re-post it without detection, so there is no difference in that respect. As for a DD notification, I doubt if many would miss one anyway.

One difference is that emails can be intercepted and data extracted invisibly with no notice to user. If post goes missing you know about it.
Having said that whilst the alternatives suggested are preferable and probably easy to implement this is not a particularly great security risk - after all most people give out their bank details freely to all sorts of people. I'd look for a better way to do it but not lose too much sleep over it PROVIDED customer has given informed consent (and thereby accepted a responsibility for risk) for his membership and account details to be communicated by email - and that needs, IMO, to be more than "we will use your email address to communicate about your membership"
