Thanks everyone for your input on this, I didn't expect so many replies.

I think there are many issues surrounding this not the least of which are how do the police inform us that someone is missing in the first place and how can it be meaningfully entered on to a Health record.

We then enter in to the areas of of schedule 2 and schedule 3, in addition someone might be intentionally missing without committing a crime but it would be good to have them removed from the missing persons register.

Someone may be being chased for civil rather than criminal reasons so would we have to release info in that case (I doubt it)?. If they are missing for criminal reasons and turn up at a GP practice would we then be seeing the spectacle of a police car arriving at speed to snaffle their prey during a consultation? Of course the clever criminal would not be using his/her own identity to get these services in the first place.

As always I think we need a comprhensive well thought out sharing agreement between all the relevant bodies and until we have I think we should not release a thing.

Adults with capacity who are not
suspected of being involved with an offence have the right
to be "missing". I would want evidence from the police that
we had the right to run the searches under s29 and refer to
Caldicott decision if I had any doubts.

Chris, an angle not considered in the discussion so far is
that the police could be conducting a “proof of life”
enquiry (I don’t know if you know the reason for their
request), in which case it is very important to them to know
 if the person turns up.

 All

I have just had an interesting request from the police
asking if they could be informed if someone registered as
missing turns up for medical treatment.

If we ignore the issue of whether someone will have this
information recorded on their record I find myself in a
 dilemma.

I would expect a missing person to be part of a legitimate
investigation so would probably be happy to supply
information for a section 29 request. However the request
could only happen if I had already sent the police
information that the missing person has turned up which I
 shouldn't  before receiving a section 29.

Does anyone know how/if this information could be provided?
Is there something under PACE? Am I over thinking it?

 Regards
 Chris
