Hi Simon,
Firstly, it would be interesting to learn if the client has additional learning needs (like dyslexia assistance etc).
However, yes as a support and mentoring provider, we have had similar requests before but have often found it one of 3 things:
1) (first the -ve) The student doesn’t have the aptitude for the course because past study support as done the work for them.
2) They are simply finding the technology or methods given inhibitive and getting in the way of their learning causing a complete block.
3) Genuine need for different study skills due to the faster pace of H&FE
For the first issues there is generally nothing that we can do and it’s an unfortunate situation disabled students come up against.
For the latter two, in the past we've sent in our Coaching Support teams.
What they do is explore various learning strategies with the client that can be whittle down to match their preferred and natural learning style. We’d need to understand what he has and hasn't used before.
The issue normally is, that these aren't always explained or explored and a lot of the time it’s a combination of things that work. Usually done in 1-2 hr 1:1 sessions, either face to face or via skype.
Once done we set a structured program of mentoring to ensure he can adapt to the techniques and use them as if second nature (not easy and takes effort) whilst maintaining a good pace with his studies.
Hope that helps..
Thanks
Imran
