If schools comply with their obligations under Chapter 2 of Part 1 of The Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 then they are likely to comply with DPP1.

Subject: [data-protection] Biometric Data used in schools
Who has read this article in the Daily Mail? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2532914/More-1million-children-fingerprints-taken-school-without-parents-knowledge.html.
It's misleading to some extent as no fingerprint images are actually used, not as shown in the top photograph. It's a sampling process. It was based on this report from Big Brother Watch. http://www.bigbrotherwatch.org.uk/files/reports/Biometrics_final.pdf but it's not exactly news.
The Daily Telegraph ran this article just over a year ago. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/9764739/Schools-banned-from-fingerprinting-pupils.html
Do any subscribers here know where this gathering of biometric data would sit within the Data Protection Act 1998? Are schools generally aware of responsibilities under the Act?
