Dear all
on a similar pathway of former discussions about opt in / opt out do you want to consider also the case of cowboy-events organisers such a certain GovNet.co.uk?
This is the case of those marketing guys that keep on sending obsessing email spam messages with subject 'Can you please advise' even if you have never ever had the faintest idea neither to register with them nor to attend their events. So that they might have harvested your address online or bought it from other companies or individuals.
There is no email link to opt out and the clear scope of their email communications is trying to sell networking opportunities with politicians and civil servants to small businesses and consultants, researchers, authors.
The main office of this specific company is in Manchester, if you call and ask for a data protection officer the receptionist is likely to say
1) who?
2) can I take your details?
3) we have a data manager in London, can I pass your details?
There is no trace of an address or telephone number of a data manager in London on their website.
Instead, if you are able to find their privacy statement, that is well hidden under a 'Disclaimer' section, you read complete non-sense statements such "You can opt out of this service [you have never opt in] by emailing [log in to unmask] stating 'I do not wish to receive news about products and service being offered by GovNet' Also, if you post or send offensive, inappropriate or objectionable content anywhere on or to GovNet.co.ukor otherwise engage in any disruptive behaviour on GovNet.co.uk, GovNetcan use whatever information that is available to it about you to stop such behaviour. This may involve informing relevant third parties such as your employer, e-mail/Internet provider and law enforcement agencies about the content and your behaviour."
I find disturbing that the "advisory board of senior parliamentary figures" involved with this company? charity? publisher? organiser of events? lobby? who knows! active since 1997, has never found the time and the inspiration to check and review the way they use exchange or buy personal data.
It is legal they continue to do as they had just discovered the magic of email marketing and we still lived in the early 1990s exchanging email address of pen-pals friends of friends of friends they would be happy to introduce you to?
Kind Regards
