You could if they were subject to FOIA. Alas, they are not and we are. We can always leave the public sector for less scrutiny. :) What we are experiencing is the joyful burden of serving the public.

The default view that 'public servant = scrutiny'has always struck me as a rather over-simplistic logical leap, and one that flies in the face of basic rights: remember, the HRA applies to all humans, even those who work in the public sector and I don't recall any part of Article 8 stating that a person in a publicly-funded job is entitled to any less in the way of privacy than someone doing a comparable job in the private sector.
Moreover - the 'publish everything' types might think on the fact that you can't un-disclose information. Coupled with the fact that people aren't public servants their whole lives (retirements, job changes, lottery wins for the fortunate etc), it seems fair to ask why someone deserves to have their financial details open for public peering long after they've stopped taking the government's shilling?
I pay my small part towards the salaries of the people who work in the shops I buy things from. Does that mean I have some sort of right to examine their individual wages?
