Hi All,
One of my students has a physical impairment with her spine which she's
having all sorts of fun wrangling the NHS to get surgical and non surgical
treatment for here in the UK. She hopes to be able to go on her year
abroad to France in September but may still need regular physiotherapy and
possibly steroid injections by then. She will also need prescription
painkillers such as tramadol or morphine.
She hopes to do the Teaching Assistant type placement but we are setting
up a backup university place for her as well. We are aware of possible
issues about French attitudes to disability/impairment.
How might healthcare work for my student in France? Her tutor hasn't been
able to give us a clear answer and I said I would try and find out from
you guys. Accessibility and cost of healthcare may affect her "fit to go"
or "not fit to go" decisions. She will defer the year if she isn't fit
but this has financial and wellbeing implications for her.
I'm happy to talk on or off-list.
Many thanks
Natalya
