As he's no longer on the list, I'm going to ask a question Tim Turner posed recently on twitter. Is the Royal Mail the processor or the controller of the personal data it conveys?

Back in the day there was "Registered Letters" (which were insured, tracked and signed for) and "Special Delivery", which meant the item was merely urgent and in order to meet the deadline sent by messenger from the sorting office - a bit like telegrams used to be.
Then they merged the two, still calling it "Special Delivery", so now you have an insured, tracked and signed-for item which is delivered to a deadline. [Even if you didn't actually want all three aspects].
I find that SD items are usually brought by van, which makes sense given that they are often valuable parcels rather than documents, and in order to meet the deadline ahead of the postie-on-foot who didn't arrive until lunchtime the last three places I've lived.
