Hi,
As an ex-DPO, I would guess when you took the photographs you did not
take them for "marketing" purposes.
It has already pointed out about religion, add skin colour therefore
race. Gender too ... in academia the Dr and Professor do not show
gender, and many academics like it that way.
What if one of your pretty/handsome members of staff get stalked because
of some pervert ...
In what way does it help the communication(s)?

The alternative could be to have a simple signature (a "short"
signature) that goes to a personal profile page for each of your
employees. There they have the choice to put their photo on if they so
wish and you achieve the further bonus of "short/small" emails.
Anything like what you want should be on a voluntary basis and no more.
I hope it helps a little,
Cheers
Charles
