This is not a DP issue in itself, and likely copyright issues (using the work of others without permission and selling a public performance commercially to the world at large) aside, it is really a decision for the school (Headteacher) to take.
In Scotland, many schools that I have come across, go for an outright ban on recordings being made - I think schools just prefer to enforce a ban and avoid these types of difficulties. Regardless of how enforceable that will be in practice, this is invariably not due to DP concerns but rather child protection issues and potential re-use of video posted on YouTube etc.
Perhaps, taking into account the ICO's guidance, schools should be considering how to allow recordings without compromising the protection of individual children - children at risk are not identifiable, they have a role that keeps them out of the spotlight etc.
Certainly, given current concerns, some sort of limitation would seem reasonable e.g. a reminder that any recording is for personal use only and must not end up online on social networking sites etc.
Not strictly a legal issue but one for policy and further discussion perhaps!
Cheers,
Jackie.
