Liberty is London's annual arts festival created by deaf and disabled people and presented by the Mayor of London. 2012 will mark 10 years of Liberty and the vision for this year is to celebrate the anniversary by programming a showcase of artists from previous years together with some new and specially created work. Liberty 2012 will take place at several locations over the first weekend of the Paralympic Games on the 1st and 2nd September.
On Saturday 1st September Liberty 2012 and the BFI (British Film Institute, located on London's South Bank) will present two programmes of the best in new short film by disabled people.
The programmes are co-curated by Caglar Kimyoncu (Artistic Director of filmpro limited), and Julie McNamara (Artistic Director of Vital Xposure). Julie and Caglar are the former creative team behind London Disability Film Festival; they recently curated the international programme for Wide Angle Media, Vancouver's first Disability Film Festival and have worked, together and individually, in many other countries.
The curators are looking for international work which is new to the UK, as well as new work from within the UK and particularly from the regions. Selected works will be curated into two ninety-minute sessions, both of which will be screened free on 1st September in the BFI Studio and promoted through Liberty and BFI marketing campaigns.
Disabled film makers are invited to submit recent shorts (maximum length 20 minutes) in any genre and language.
Submissions deadline is noon on Wednesday 13th June 2012.
