I second your thoughts.

Evening All,
I draft this as a personal response, rather than one from my organisation. I
think I saw the word 'anonymous' in the first post in this string. I hope
this is correct and if so am supportive of the objectives of the proposal.
'WHAT!' you might say, in view of my responses over the last couple of years
and my more frequent ones in a pre-NHS lifetime.
And I might respond, 'Um, anonymous means it is no longer personal data.' Of
course this does require that 'anonymous' really means what it says.
Now as it happens I suffer from a particularly painfull condition that can
leave me incapacitated and unbearable for a number of hours, whilst I am in
such extreme pain I wish I was unconscious. My default state is constant
low-level pain that doesn't bear mention. There will be one or two
contributors to this list that are aware of this.
My condition has been investigated by the NHS for nearly six years, without
successful resolution. I'm parked as undiagnosable (if this is a word).
I would really like someone to come up with a solution to my problem. One
consultant was concerned I might commit suicide as the pain is so severe. I
was able to convince him Mrs Doherty had too much for me to do for me to
consider death. Thankfully during an episode (three in the last two months)
I tend to concentrate on knowing I will recover to normality and all goes as
well as it possibly can. I simply withdraw from society for three or four
hours, whilst I recover. Nevertheless, it ain't nice.
My last episode was yesterday, meaning my planned round of golf was out of
the question, the day was ruined and, do you know what, if someone is given
the information about my problem in an anonymous (or more likely
pseudonymised) form and comes up with a result, I'd be as chuffed as a very
chuffed person. Clearly I have an axe with sharpening requirements here.
Regards,
md

I agree with Simon. The initative has nothing to do with open government as
the Freedoms Bill; it is to do with the powers in the Health and Social Care
Bill.
What has happened is that this legislation has provided Ministers with very
wide ranging powers which are being used to deliver the objectives (e.g. re
research); these powers are uncomfortably broad in my opinion.
See "Does the Health Care Bill permit medical research without patient
consent?"
http://amberhawk.typepad.com/amberhawk/2011/11/does-the-health-care-bill-per
mit-medical-research-without-patient-consent.html. I now understand why
they are in the Bill.
My conclusion in my blog was "What the above shows is that the passing of
that Government (the New Labour one) has not diminished the urgent need to
provide checks and balances on the possibility that wide ranging powers will
be used by over-zealous Ministers"
