Nic,
This is already happening.

Here is an ACPO report on it from 2006.

Here is how the intelligent algorithms within video displays remove the need for a "live" security guard. Preset activities, if picked up on the videos trigger the system and it sends the alarms.

What is interesting to consider is this "foresight" report from 2001 and where we are in 2011. We will have "smart spaces", but at what cost?

In all of these documents, the goal is to create a benign future where technology helps us to achieve the good life. Yet, in helping us, it still does not address the question of what is the good life and what it is to be human.
Best,
Lawrence

Simon,
They are already talking about, developing, RFID interwoven into clothing. They are already embedded in the infrastructure of large buildings to report on stress and weight distribution lists. One must always remember that if it is in the retail sector, the RnD is 10 yrs ahead of it.
Here is some OECD research on it from 2005
http://www.oecd.org/document/58/0,3746,en_2649_34223_35186234_1_1_1_1,00.html
Think about the following:
"We are beginning to see the miniaturisation of sensors, driven by the tools of
nanotechnology, to the extent that sensors are already disappearing into all sorts
of appliances and everyday objects - e.g. Gillette's insertion of RFID tags into
razors." (p.150) (below)

In the future, only the Amish will be "free". :)
Best,
Lawrence

Just a thought - but to get round the legalities of the PATRIOT Act (and whatever other acts exist in the USA) and RIPA/DPA in the UK, where phone signal interception is regulated; maybe to get the information they need, they do not need mobile phones.
You could ask at point of entry if people will pick up an RFID tagged device and carry it with them. They don't need to give any personal details and RFID readers placed in the mall could pick up the movements. You could even offer a small incentive to take part (voucher or some such). Plus if you build the RFID devices right they will be so cheap as to not be a problem if they get thrown away or taken home - mind you this might be a disadvantage as I for one would get the voucher then leave the device somewhere whilst I went shopping!
I think I just talked myself out of my idea!
Simon.
