Thank you for the many responses I have had to this post. I have some good suggestions and will continue to approach the dept.
For those that have asked for further detail, the student becomes stressed by choice and has difficulty with questions that start with none of the above, all of the above. In addition he does not realise that sometimes there may be two answers to one question. The study skills tutor is working on exam technique for example covering all other questions up to enable him to read one question at a time.
The department have said that they use multi choice to test breadth of knowledge, essay type questions may not always test breadth. This was a very brief conversation though.
