What's generally accepted is overwriting to the NATO standard - Googling this will give you lots of examples.

Do list-members know of an accepted industry standard for destruction of PCs, their hard disks, and also other magnetic media? I know that disks should be overwritten before disposal but is there a minimum number of times or other recommended best practice?
