The whole wikileaks incident goes to show how surprisingly lax the levels of encryption and security are within the various embassies and government departments where the communications emanated from. No doubt heads will roll after this and enforced information security techniques will be introduced.
Interestingly Malcolm Rifkind, former UK Foreign Secretary, speaking on the radio this morning pointed out the difference between what's in the public interest and what the public are interested in. We may enjoy reading with great relish about the leaks on China's intentions towards Korea or how the Arab countries feel towards Iran, but it isn't necessarily in the public interest or in the interests of international relations and global security for people to know these things!
Whether you agree or disagree with Wikileaks' actions, it's probably safe to assume this sort of thing will be nipped in the bud sooner or later either through legal injunctions, improved security of communications or by politicians and diplomats simply being more diplomatic.
So now's the time to make the most of it while it lasts!
